When you are missing a tooth, two of the most common ways to replace it are a dental implant and a bridge. Both restore your smile and your bite, but they work differently and suit different situations. Here is how they compare so you can have an informed conversation with your dentist.
How each one works
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone. Once it fuses with the bone, it holds a custom crown that looks and functions like a natural tooth, and nothing attaches to the teeth around it. A dental bridge fills the gap by anchoring a false tooth to the healthy teeth on either side, which are shaped to hold crowns that support it.
Longevity
Implants are designed to last many years and often a lifetime with good care. Bridges typically last around ten to fifteen years before they need replacing, partly because they rely on the neighboring teeth to hold them in place.
Protecting your other teeth
This is a major difference. An implant stands on its own, so your healthy teeth are left untouched. A bridge requires shaping the two adjacent teeth, even if they were perfectly healthy. Implants also stimulate the jawbone the way a natural root does, which helps protect the bone and your facial structure over time. Bridges do not.
Cost and timing
Bridges usually cost less up front and are faster, often completed within a couple of weeks. Implants cost more initially and take longer, since the post needs time to fuse with the bone. Over the long run, because implants last longer and protect the surrounding teeth, many patients find them the better value.
Which should you choose?
There is no single right answer. An implant is often the better long-term choice when the neighboring teeth are healthy and you want the most durable, independent option. A bridge can be a good fit when the adjacent teeth already need crowns, when timing matters, or when an implant is not suitable. The right call depends on your bone health, your budget and your goals.
